Home-grown produce encourages healthy eating

Healthy eating is more likely to be on the menu for those who have grown their own produce, an expert has claimed.

The main reason for this is the convenience of home-grown fruit and vegetables, as it can be eaten shortly after being picked, noted editor of Grow Your Own Magazine Lucy Halsall.

She continued: "The vitamin and nutrient levels are going to be absolutely sky high compared to produce that can be potentially purchased in a supermarket."

Ms Halsall suggested that people who grow their own are also more likely to know exactly what is going on their plate and may be more inclined to ensure they get their five-a-day.

Findings from Texas A&M University and Texas State University show that older adults who participate in gardening may be more likely to eat their fruit and vegetables than those who do not.
