Healthy eating 'essential' for dementia patients

Although healthy eating is imperative for everyone, dementia patients in particular can reap many benefits from it, an expert has noted.

Karen Morrison, head of service design for residential care services at Care UK, suggested that eating healthy recipes will help keep other problems at bay.

"Eating too little or missing out on essential nutrients will reduce resistance to illness and may also increase confusion," she continued.

Ms Morrison highlighted that dementia sufferers need to make sure their intake of fluids is kept up, as being well-hydrated can reduce some symptoms.

For example, she claimed that restlessness and agitation will become less prominent.

Consensus Action on Salt and Health recently warned that many pies sold in UK supermarkets and eateries contain seriously high levels of salt, potentially putting people's health at risk.

The worst offender of those surveyed was found to be the Wetherspoon Chicken and Mushroom Pie with chips or mash, gravy and peas.
