Home cooks 'want to know where produce is from'

There is a growing interest among home cooks about where their food is sourced from, one expert has suggested.

People are also concerned about how items are produced, noted Katherine Darling of the Plunkett Foundation, a charity which delivers the national Making Local Food Work programme.

Ms Darling highlighted that research from the foundation showed 90 per cent of people are interested in buying local food in the future, indicating that it is a growing trend.

"Food labelling can be a difficult issue; there have been cases of misleading labelling which encourages consumers to believe certain products are produced locally when they're not," she continued.

The expert added that the best way people can be sure they are using local goods in their home cooking is to purchase directly from the seller.

A recent Local Government Regulation report found that 18 per cent of products that claim to be locally produced could not have their information verified.
