Future food supplies need to be addressed

The reality of how to feed billions of people in years to come needs to be given thought, speakers at the Royal Society has said.

Scientists claimed that in order for agriculture to be sustainable in the long-term, atmospheric greenhouses gases need to be stabilised, home cooks may be interested to hear.

Dr Eric Davidson, from the Woods Hole Research Centre in the US, emphasised that reducing the amount of meat humans eat will not be enough on its own.

"Without major technological and management improvements that increase the efficiency of nitrogen use by crops and decrease losses from manure management, the rate of N2O will not begin to decrease significantly," he commented.

A study from the Local Government Regulation recently found that many so-called locally sourced foods may be coming from further afield than people first realise.

It found that in England and Wales, many products are making false claims about where they are from.
