Quality fruit and vegetables 'essential to healthy eating'

Healthy eating is as much about the quality of fruit and vegetables as the quantity, one expert has suggested.

UK Harley Street Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston highlighted that supplements are generally not a good enough substitute for getting the vitamins and minerals first-hand.

"It's believed that it's a synergistic natural combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre in a plantarian diet that help your body to do its job effectively," she explained.

There are a number of factors that influence the quality of the fruit and vegetables people consume, Ms Bishop-Weston stressed, including the soil they are grown in and how ripe they are when picked.

Distribution is also essential, as she claimed that frozen peas are found to be more nutritious than fresh varieties.

Which? Gardening recently conducted a study to find that non-organically grown vegetables are tastier and more nutritious than those that are grown organically.
