Home grown produce is much cheaper, says expert

Consumers need to be made more aware of the benefits of using home grown ingredients in their recipes, one expert has suggested.

Not only is it cheaper than buying from a supermarket, but also helps the environment as it cuts down on packaging, noted Trewin Restorack, chief executive officer of Global Action Plan.

"You tend to eat what you grow and know what pesticides you're putting on it, so it definitely has environmental benefits," he continued.

Mr Restorack highlighted that there is still much debate going on surrounding healthy eating and home grown produce, with some claiming that organic is better for humans.

He acknowledged that although the health of humans is up for discussion, there is no debate on how organic goods help the health of the planet.

Home cooks were recently encouraged by Hannah Brinsden, nutritionist for Consensus Action on Salt and Health, to avoid using salt to add flavour to dishes.
