New 'fat tax' could damage catering businesses
The catering industry could be seriously damaged by the government's decision to start taxing takeaway food outlets, an expert believes.
Bob Fox, director of the Nationwide Caterers Association, said that although many people are in favour of healthy eating, it is ultimately down to personal choice.
"It's completely unfair - how can you tax a McDonald's branch the same as a village chippy that's probably just surviving?" Mr Fox explained.
He emphasised that small businesses are struggling to survive as it is without "another stealth tax" to contend with.
Mr Fox recommended that the government does more to teach youngsters about the merits of healthy eating and how they can change their habits for the better.
The government's proposed scheme is currently undergoing a trial period in Oldham, Manchester, where food outlets will be charged as much as £1,000 for selling unhealthy meals and snacks.
