Fruit and vegetable guidance 'perfectly clear'

The advice on how much fruit and vegetables should be used in recipes is clear, one expert believes.

Abigail Tyler, nutrition consultant and founder of the Vitality Clinic Nutrition Consultancy, emphasised that people are aware of the health benefits of these foods.

"Both fruit and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals particularly vitamin C, vitamin K and folate are a great source of dietary fibre which helps maintain a healthy digestive system," she continued.

Ms Tyler explained that people should be aiming for five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, which ideally need to be of different varieties.

This will help reduce exposure to a number of health conditions including heart disease and obesity, she added.

According to research published in the European Heart Journal, a higher intake of fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of ischaemic heart disease mortality.
