Celebrity chefs 'overshadow' great food in the south-west
The rise of celebrity chefs means many people do not realise how great food can be in south-west England, one travel expert has said.
Oliver Berry, Lonely Planet author of Devon, Cornwall and south-west England, pointed out that the likes of Jamie Oliver and Gary Rhodes have taken the shine off local businesses.
"That can range right from really young talented local chefs that perhaps haven't received the coverage that they deserve right through to farm shops and local food shops, bakers and fish and chip shops," he continued.
Mr Berry explained that these people are crucial to the culture of south-west England yet often go unrecognised.
In the latest Lonely Planet guide on the region, the top five restaurants were named as Gidleigh Park, Bordeaux Quay, Sienna, Riverford Field Kitchen and Paul Ainsworth at No 6.
The guide stated that in many respects, the south-west is overtaking London as England's culinary capital.
