South-west England boasts some of the best food

Home cooks in search of some of the best cookery in the country need to think about heading to south-west England, Lonely Planet has suggested.

The group revealed that there is a real focus on quality ingredients in the region, with chefs keen to use local and ethical produce.

In many cases, it is even living up to the standards of London, which is widely considered the culinary capital of the UK.

Author of the guide Oliver Berry said: "The south-west is every foodie's dream; just caught crab accompanied with local wine in spectacular settings - what could be better?"

He added that the south-west gives a really great insight into exactly where British food is currently at.

This follows the news that London has received its highest ever number of Michelin stars this year, with a record 53 restaurants being awarded the accolade.
