GM foods have real potential, says expert

It is possible that genetically modified (GM) foods can be used to improve the world's food supply, one expert has suggested to home cooks.

Barbara Gallani, Food and Drink Federation (FDF) director of food safety and science, said more investigation will be needed into the feasibility of such a move.

"Robust controls are necessary to protect the consumer and the environment; and consumer education and information on both potential risks and benefits are fundamental to public acceptance," she explained.

Ms Gallani revealed that the FDF believes that modern biotechnology can have an active role in securing food supplies for the future.

The World Cancer Research Fund recently suggested that scientists estimate around a third of the most common cancers could be prevented through eating healthily, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight.

It identified that although many people are aware of the link between sunburn and cancer, the same cannot be said about healthy eating and diet.
