Sunday roasts can contain 160% of salt RDA, research suggests

Those concerned with healthy eating may be interested to hear that a Sunday roast could include up to 160 per cent of a person's recommended daily allowance of salt, research suggests.

When looking at almost 600 roast dinner products, it was discovered that family favourites such as ready-stuffed joints and stuffing can be fully of unnecessary salt, according to a survey by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH).

Katharine Jenner, CASH campaign manager, said: "With all we know about the dangers of salt on our health, it is disappointing that a portion of vegetables or a small amount of mustard could still contain more salt than a packet of crisps."

Ms Jenner advised people that while a roast dinner can constitute a balanced and healthy meal, it is extremely important that ready prepared ingredients do not contain excessive amounts of salt.

Meanwhile, registered nutritionist Carina Norris has advised individuals that they should "cook from scratch" to save money.
