EU reveals new draft legislation for food information
The European Union council for employment, social policy, health and consumer affairs has revealed drafted legislation regarding food information.
In these new proposals, food companies would have to label the energy value of their foods, as well as nutrient quantities, including fat, protein, sugar and salt.
A representative for the council said: "All elements of the nutrition declaration should appear together in the same field of vision but some elements may be repeated on the front of pack."
In addition, the EU believes that the country of origin should be indicated for pork, lamb and poultry. This rule is also already in existence for beef products within Europe.
Meanwhile, the British Diabetic Association (BDA) has claimed that individuals have a wide spectrum of choice when selecting their recommended daily allowance of five fruits or vegetables.
Rachel Cook, senior public health dietician with the BDA said that frozen vegetables can be a simple way to meet part of the recommended five-a-day intake, as they are a "nutritionally great" choice for home cooking.
