Nutrition policy transferred to the Department of Health
The government has decided to move nutrition policy from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to the Department of Health (DOH) from today (October 1st) onwards.
As a result, the DoH will now care for several matters including nutritional labelling, nutrition surveys and how food reformulation can be utilised to reduce salt, saturated fat and sugar levels.
In response to the move, the DoH has ensured that nutrition policy will now be delivered in a coherent manner and has thanked the FSA for competently making the transfer.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley said: "The transfer of nutrition policy in England into the Department of Health means we can give the general public more consistent information."
This news comes after the University of Texas made the claim that sports drinks that contain a high proportion of sugar carry "no nutritional value" and warned that "whole fruit is a better nutritional choice than fruit juice".
